SAP Business Technology Platform: what it is, what it does and why companies need to know about it

Tuesday 24 February 2026

If you work in a company that uses SAP or is considering adopting it, sooner or later you will hear about SAP BTP. Business Technology Platform. It’s actually SAP’s answer to a very real question that every company asks: how do I make SAP work together with all the other systems I have, in a modern and efficient way, without building homemade integrations that no one knows how to manage anymore?

SAP BTP is the platform that connects, extends, and evolves the SAP ecosystem. It is not a module, it is not an add-on, it is not traditional middleware. It is a cloud environment where companies can develop applications, integrate systems, analyze data and automate processes.

What is SAP Business Technology Platform

SAP BTP is a cloud platform that brings together four core capabilities: database and data management, analytics, application development and integration, and artificial intelligence and automation. It can be used on SAP infrastructure, on public clouds such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, or in hybrid mode.

Its main function is to bridge the gap between SAP-the company’s core business system-and the rest of the digital world: other enterprise software, legacy systems, e-commerce platforms, production systems, partner portals, and mobile applications.

Before SAP BTP, integrating SAP with an external system often required complex custom developments that were difficult to maintain and update when SAP released new versions. BTP changes this pattern: it provides pre-built connectors, low-code tools, and SAP-managed runtime environments.

The main areas of SAP BTP

Database and data management

SAP BTP includes SAP HANA Cloud, SAP’s in-memory database available as a managed service. It allows large volumes of data to be centralized and analyzed in real time, without having to manage the hardware infrastructure.

Analytics and business intelligence

SAP Analytics Cloud is the analytics solution integrated into BTP. It allows building dashboards, reports and forecasts that draw directly from SAP data, without manual exports. A CFO can have real-time visibility into financial KPIs, or an operations manager can monitor the efficiency of production processes.

Application development and integration

This area includes tools for developing custom applications that extend S/4HANA without changing its core (the “clean core” principle), low-code/no-code environments, SAP Integration Suite for connecting with external systems, and API management.

Artificial intelligence and automation

SAP BTP includes pre-built AI services-such as document recognition, text classification or demand prediction-and process automation tools to automate repetitive tasks without human intervention.

Why SAP BTP is relevant for Italian companies

Integration with legacy systems: many Italian companies have invested in vertical systems–production management, quality, HR, CRM–that need to be connected to SAP. BTP provides the tools to do this in a governed way.

Extensions without risking upgrades: with BTP, it is possible to extend the functionality of S/4HANA with applications developed on the platform, which remain separate from the core and are unaffected by standard upgrades.

Access to SAP innovation: SAP is increasingly investing in BTP as a platform to deploy new AI, automation, and analytics capabilities.

SAP BTP and integration with third-party systems

The most frequent use cases in Italian companies include:

  • Connection between SAP S/4HANA and e-commerce platforms to synchronize orders, inventory and billing
  • Integration between SAP and MES systems for real-time production data collection
  • Link between SAP and ticketing or CRM systems to align business and operational information
  • Data exchange with government agencies, customs or electronic invoicing systems

How to approach SAP BTP: a step-by-step approach

SAP BTP is a modular platform: you can start with a specific area-for example, integration with an external system-and then gradually extend it. The most effective starting point is to understand what concrete problems the company wants to solve and assess whether BTP can answer them.
