According to <em>the Milan Polytechnic&#8217;s Digital Innovation in SMEs Observatory<\/em>, about <strong>42 percent of SMEs invest in digital technology<\/strong>, but more than 30 percent do not fully recognize the value of digital in their industry. <\/p>\n\n<p>A not-so-competitive profile emerges where only a minority <strong>(36 percent) show a convinced or advanced approach<\/strong> toward digital transformation, while the rest manifest a more cautious or skeptical attitude.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This demonstrates the need for companies to have a <strong>deeper understanding of the innovative solutions<\/strong> made available to them in order to enjoy a long-term strategic vision.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital Culture and Process Digitization<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Many obstacles to digitization are related primarily <strong>to the use of poorly developed tools<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sys-datgroup.com\/velika\/en\/servizi\/food-365\/\" data-type=\"servizi\" data-id=\"1244\"><strong>40 percent of SMEs use ERP software.<\/strong><\/a>, there is still a high number of companies that are not familiar with these technologies or are not interested in adopting them. In addition, the area of human resources remains poorly digitized, with only 60 percent of SMEs adopting digital solutions in this area. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are ERP systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>ERP systems collect and organize business information and help organizations manage operations<\/strong>, even as they expand.  <\/p>\n\n<p>ERP is a category of business software that<strong> automates processes and<\/strong> <strong>provides internal insights and controls<\/strong> by drawing on a central database that collects input from departments including accounting, manufacturing, supply chain management, sales, marketing and human resources (HR).<\/p>\n\n<p>ERP systems centralize data, provide interdepartmental visibility, <strong>enable efficient analysis<\/strong>, resolve data conflicts and drive process improvements, all translating into <strong>cost savings and improved productivity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key points of an ERP software<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It collects information from various departments into a common database, allowing the company&#8217;s well-being to be monitored using a single view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It combines business functions such as finance, production, inventory and order management, customer communication, sales and marketing, project management, and human resources, providing detailed analysis and reporting on each department.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It generates savings in time and money by exposing inefficient manual processes and revealing opportunities for growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can choose the deployment model you prefer between <strong>on-premise, cloud and hybrid<\/strong>. Although <strong>cloud ERP<\/strong> has become extremely popular in recent years, the best approach for a given company depends on its needs. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is ERP important for SMEs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>ERP systems have become true catalysts for SMEs that wish to reallocate human and financial capital to create more efficient business processes, saving money without sacrificing quality or performance.<\/p>\n\n<p>An ERP is critical when it comes to planning and coordination: employees can view current inventory and customer orders in detail, then compare suppliers&#8217; purchase orders and forecast future demand. If necessary, they can adjust to prevent problems. ERP software also improves communication and collaboration because workers can check the status of other departments to guide their decisions.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9 Components of an ERP system<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>An ERP includes several modules: <strong>packages of features tailored<\/strong> to various aspects of the business, including back and front office roles.  <\/p>\n\n<p>However, it is possible to customize it with additional features that are needed or that can integrate with in-house or legacy solutions.<\/p>\n\n<p>Main ERP modules are:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Financial module<\/strong>, the foundation of any ERP system, handles general accounting and all financial data.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Human resource management (HRM) module<\/strong> manages the workforce and maintains employee records with detailed information, such as available PTO and performance reviews, and can anticipate workforce trends in various departments or demographic data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supply chain management module<\/strong> allows you to oversee the flow of goods from suppliers through production to the hands of customers. Production runs smoothly, and you have a broad view of available materials, their locations, and the scheduling of machinery and labor resources. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Customer Relationship Management (CRM) module <\/strong>tracks all customer communications, assists in lead management, and can improve customer service and increase sales.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Production Module<\/strong> helps coordinate all steps to make products. The module can track the number of ongoing and finished items. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inventory Management Module <\/strong>shows current inventory levels down to SKU level and updates those numbers in real time. It also measures key parameters related to inventory.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Project Management Module <\/strong>tracks projects, including the time and resources invested on them. It can simplify billing to clients and encourage collaboration among staff members working on a project. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E-commerce Module<\/strong> allows you to manage the back-end and front-end of your online stores.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marketing Automation Module<\/strong> manages marketing activities on all digital channels (e-mail, web, and social) and allows you to optimize and personalize your messages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Purchasing Module<\/strong> monitors the purchase of raw materials or finished goods. It can automate requests for quotations and purchase orders and minimize over- and under-purchasing when linked to demand planning. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orders Module:<\/strong> prioritizes customer orders from all channels as soon as they arrive and tracks their progress until delivery.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Warehouse Module<\/strong> directs activities such as receiving, picking, packing, and shipping. It can save time and costs by identifying more efficient ways to perform these activities. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Workforce Module <\/strong>(WFM) tracks attendance and hours worked; some can also manage payroll.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ERP integration and data sharing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Before adopting an ERP system, it is essential to assess which existing systems can be replaced or integrated with ERP modules. Remember: the more information in the ERP the greater the value of the investment.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Before you decide, read these three considerations:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Is the existing system doing the required work?  <\/strong>Otherwise, the relevant form offered by the ERP vendor should be used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If your existing system holds the data, it is important to know if there is a connector to facilitate the exchange between the two systems.<\/strong>  Migration can be complicated, and available connectors may vary in quality and support for upgrades. It is essential to consider that upgrades to the ERP or stand-alone system could cause problems with existing connectors, even to the point of completely compromising upgrade plans. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If there is a connector, does it work in real time and maintain the flow of all necessary data to and from each system?  <\/strong>Some connectors work in real time and others synchronize systems daily or weekly. Some move a limited data set between systems, and others work in only one direction: from an inventory management system to ERP. If your team has done extensive custom configurations, the connector may not recognize certain types of data.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One Supplier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>These potential complications highlight the advantage of using modules from a single vendor to manage different business functions. <strong>A unified ERP system<\/strong> not only prevents problems but can also encourage adoption by flattening the learning curve.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you decide to maintain the best systems and integrate them with your chosen ERP, keep in mind that checking that the connectors are working properly will become part of every upgrade cycle.
